Electropolishing is defined as the precisely controlled electrolytic removal of metal using an electro-chemical process. The metal component, composed of stainless steel or other alloys, is placed in an electrolyte solution and electric current is passed through the component. In essence it is the reverse of electroplating. During electroplating material is deposited onto the component; Electropolishing mechanically restructures the surface of the metal by expelling electrons from the exposed surface causing a smoothing reaction.
The process of Electropolishing is so refined that removal of material can be controlled within .0001” per surface. The electropolished surface has an enhancement of its micro-inch measurement; Electropolishing descales the surface, removing oxides and impurities and leaves a sterile, bright, passive finish.
The component to be Electropolished is connected to the positive or anodic terminal, and the negative or cathodic terminal is connected to the chosen conductor (rectifier). When the component is submerged into the electrolyte solution, a complete electrical circuit is formed. The current applied during this process is direct current (DC). The amount of material removed during the Electropolishing process is dependent on the amount of DC current applied and the amount time the component remains in the process.
